Shanmughasundari died this morning after prolonged illness.

Ms Jayalalithaa expressed grief over the demise of Shanmughasundari and offered her condolences to the bereaved family. She said she prayed to the almighty for the departed soul to rest in peace
On behalf of the AIADMK, the Presidium Chairman, E Madhusudhanan and the party's Organizing Secretary Sulochana Sampath paid their respects to  the mortal remains of Shanmughasundari by placing a wreath. Several party functionaries of south Chennai district accompanied them.
