According to the order, 1,623 guest lecturers will be appointed at a consolidated pay of 10 thousand rupees per month.
In a statement released today, Ms Jayalalithaa said higher education was the pillar of human development and was the crowning glory of traditional education. Apart from providing the qualifications necessary for the employment market, higher education also gave the enhanced capability which was essential for teachers, doctors, engineers, Civil servants, scientists, entrepreneurs and several industrial experts.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa recalled that to impart higher education, in particular, to students from villages, she had ordered opening of 11 University affiliated Arts and Science Colleges last year and 3 Engineering colleges, 7 polytechnic colleges, and 11 University affiliated Arts and Science Colleges this year.
Opening of new colleges alone was not enough, introduction of new courses as per the requirements of the students was vital, the Chief Minister noted. Considering this, Ms Jayalalithaa said she had ordered opening of 299 new under graduate and post graduate research studies in 51 colleges.
Ms. Jayalalithaa said she had ordered creation of a total of 841 assistant professors post including 369 assistant professors posts for the year 2012-2013, 365 assistant professors posts for the year 2013-2014, 107 assistant professors posts for the year 2014-2015.
The Chief Minister pointed out that she was informed that a total of one thousand 623 assistant professors posts including the newly created posts and the posts which were already vacant were to be filled. Since it would take time to fill up these posts through Teachers Recruitment Board and the students' education would be affected till such time, Ms Jayalalithaa said she had ordered the filling up of those posts with the appointment of guest lecturers temporarily.
Accordingly, 1,623 guest lecturers would be selected and appointed immediately. They would be given a consolidated pay of 10,000 rupees per month. Ms Jayalalithaa said that this would help students studying in Government Arts and Science Colleges getting quality education.
