Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has ordered allocation of 750 crore rupees for Corporations, Municipalities and Town Panchayats in Tamil Nadu to take up works under the Integrated Urban Development Project to provide basic infrastructure facilities to the people living in the fast growing urban areas.

She has also alloted 7 crore rupees for the construction of new buildings for Town Panchayat offices which have been functioning from old and dilapidated buildings.



A Tamil Nadu government press release today said that the government led by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was determined to upgrade the infrastructure in urban areas to meet the requirements of the increasing population.


As per the 2011 census, 48.45 percentage of population in the state are residing in urban areas. In 20 years, this percentage might go up to 67. It may be noted that Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had already announced the Integrated Urban Development Project considering the necessity to provide the infrastructure facilities in urban areas as more number of people move to towns and cities in search of employment opportunities.



Under this scheme, Ms Jayalalithaa had already ordered works to be undertaken in the Corporation and Municipal areas at a cost of 5 thousand 890 crore 12 lakh rupees and in Town Panchayat areas at a cost of 763 crore 91 lakh rupees. In all, she had ordered works including development of drinking water facility, sewage disposal, construction of roads, solid waste management, bus stands, parks, etc to be undertaken at a cost of 6,654.03 crore rupees.



Works are being undertaken under this scheme after the Chief Minister alloted 506.48 crore rupees for Corporations and Municipalities and 250.80 crore rupees for Town Panchayats for the year 2011-2012. Totally, she had alloted 757.28 crore rupees. Likewise, for the year 2012-2013, Ms Jayalalithaa had alloted 500 crore rupees for Municipalities and for corporations other than Chennai and 250 crore rupees for town panchayats.



The government led by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has decided to construct new buildings for Town Panchayats considering that a large number of public visit these offices and the need had arisen to modify the old buildings to suit the requirements of the public.



Based on this, for the year 2012-2013, Ms Jayalalithaa has alloted 40 lakh rupees for 15 Town Panchayats totalling 6 crore rupees. The town panchayats for which new buildings will be constructed includes Pennaathur Town Panchayat in Vellore district, Panaimarathupatti Town Panchayat in Salem district, Arahandanallur Town Panchayat in Villupuram district, Pannaikaadu Town Panchayat  in Dindigul district, Chettipalayam  and Palipalayam Town Panchayats in Coimbatore district, Perundurai and Vengambur Town Panchayats in Erode district, Kamudhi and Sayalkudi Town Panchayats in Ramanathapuram district, Kalakaadu, Tirukurungudi, Paththamadai and Disayanvilai Town Panchayats in Tirunelveli district, Aralvaai Mozhi Town Panchayat in Kanyakumari district.



Ms Jayalalithaa has alloted one crore rupees for the construction of the office of Assistant Director of Panchayats, Tirunelveli Zone.


These measures taken by the government would help develop the infrastructure facilities in the urban areas and would ensure efficient  functioning of the local bodies.
